Black Buffalo Records releases DJ MROK-produced ode to graffiti Escape the Yard

Escape the Yard from San Francisco-based Outsiders Syndicate and produced by Chicago’s DJ MROK featuring Artifacts emcee El da Sensei drops 2 July on Black Buffalo Records.

El da Sensei and Syndicate founder Nord1kone are joined by fellow Syndicate emcees The I.M.F., Jimmy Beatz, and Cyph4. MROK handles cuts with Syndicate DJ LMT Break cutting on closing track Colors of the Jungle. The six-track splatter vinyl and cassette release features artwork from graffiti artist Joey Green.

The album provides an ode an underappreciated element of hip hop. The album tackles graffiti’s dichotomy as artform and criminalized offence. Through its lyrical content, NY Boom Bap beats, graffiti inspired production samples, and snippets from seminal graffiti cinema, including 1983’s Style Wars, Escape the Yard is a journey into the subway tunnels and train yards.

“We wanted to make an album dedicated to graffiti artists that they could listen to and hear themselves in each of the tracks,” said DJ MROK. “Graffiti is underappreciated as one of the four elements and without it, hip hop would not be what it is today. We wanted to create a soundtrack that the muralists, stencil and sticker artists, and taggers could relate to.”

The project is at time menacing and foreboding, according to MROK, who cites his affection for and influence from the Philly Wicked graf-style. “The (Philly-style) murals were angular and sharp and felt like you would cut your fingers on it.” While at other times vibrant and beautiful, Escape the Yard is an opus dedicated to the oft-scorned element.

‘Vandal / tag bandit / hittin’ up your transit / both hands branded in all city rampant’

Black Buffalo Records drops Calgary-based bRavenous project Flaunting Imperfections

Flaunting Imperfections, the fifth studio project from Halifax native, and Calgary-based boom bap emcee bRavenous drops June 25 on Black Buffalo Records. The digital release marks the first BBR release for bRav, his first full-length since 2020’s Between the Lines.

The album features production from Uncle Fester, DK, Makemdef, Nocknock, Loophole and Eng with a collection of top-tier features including Ghettosocks and NY hip hop legend Sadat X (Brand Nubian) on lead single All Those. bRav also enlists frequent collaborators Christ Sampson, Hermitofthewoods, Sean Juan, Max Deuce, Black Buffalo artists Tachichi, Sean One, and Badmouth Entertainment co-founder Broc Hamilton.

The project marks a more mature emcee coming into their own as a lyricist while staying true to his cypher-developed rhyme-style.

“It’s important to stay abstract as an artist, but, my rhymes are inspired by life’s ups and downs, who I am, and this project marks a more humble bRav,” he said. “That said, for those who have followed me, the battle tracks remain and this album offers a little something for everyone.”

The classic boom bap sound is well-entrenched throughout the project. Calgary-local collab track Won’t Stop, with Dragon Fil Empire DJ Cosm trading cuts with Fester over a strong horn sample, highlights the maturity of bRav.

‘Was in a panel van chilling / dreamed of making millions / changed the channel / now I’m chasing brilliance.’

Hip Club Groove get vinyl re-release on Black Buffalo Records

Hip Club Groove’s Trailer Park Hip Hop is set for a limited re-release (300 copies) this month. Originally released in 1994 on Sloan’s murderrecords imprint, the seminal project is featured as part of a limited double LP. Along with the group’s 1996 follow-up Land of the Lost, available on vinyl for the first time, the record is available now from Halifax-based independent hip hop label Black Buffalo Records.

Having sold 12,000 copies upon its initial release, Trailer Park Hip Hop spurred the group to extensive touring with Sloan, Len and other Halifax alternative scene bands like Thrush Hermit, Hardship Post, Plumtree and others.

A supporting video for the lead single Shootin the Gift featured a who’s who of Halifax’s entertainment scene. Directed by Trailer Park Boys creator Mike Clattenburg, the video features DJ Moves, Cheklove, and D-Rock competing in a battle of the bands. A cameo appearance from collaborator Stinkin’ Rich (Terfry) aka Buck65 sets the scene for the group to grab the prize loot and flee the venue while Buck65 provides the getaway.

While Hip Club Groove haven’t performed since 2011 at a Halifax Pop Explosion reunion, the vinyl re-release is sure to spur new energy for the Halifax hip hop scene. Black Buffalo Records boasts a recording roster that includes DJ Moves projects and production on a range of veteran and blossoming talent including Tachichi, Lxvndr, Fatt Matt, and others.

New DJ Moves remix project drops on Black Buffalo Records

Black Buffalo Records presents DJ Moves Remixes EP. The cassette release features signature Moves remix sounds with rhymes from Aquakulture feat. Mikey Factz, Halifax’s own Tachichi, Calgary’s finest DJ Cosm feat. hip hop legends Sadat X, El da Sensei and Prince Po, Sargeant and Comrade feat. Touch as well as a new Governor Bolts track. B-side instrumentals round out the 10-track opus.

The album’s debut track, 6547, is a remix of 654 from Aquakulture’s 2020 release Legacy with a new verse from New York emcee Mikey Factz. Moves finds a way to capture the live record feel and ambience from Calgary’s National Music Centre and match it with his boom bap prowess capturing the feel of the original and swapping the sax from original recording with the perfect flute sample.

Dead Fresh, the initial release from Tachichi’s forthcoming EP Gremmy Sip, gets a compression-driven beat remix with a dragging, synth-ed out sample that’s equally as menacing as the original. The remix of Soul Queen, from Sargeant and Comrade’s debut Magic Radio album, soars. Moves replaces the soul and funk bongo and horn styling of the original with a standout rock piano and reverb-draped drum intro and arpeggiated strings.

The remix of Rules from DJ Cosm’s Natural Within replaces the original bass-line-driven production with Moves’ signature piano-laden boom bap simplicity. Sherry leads with a Serge Gainsborough-esque piano and guitar loop intro before the pounding, open drum sample comes to set the stage for Paul the Apostle’s gruff delivery.

The album release is limited to 20 orange cassettes and is available via BlackBuffaloRecords.ca
